What causes lag?
1 Phsyics - the speed of electrons can only go so fast; having a game talk to a compute located on the other side the planet is going to experience lag. Similarly people on mars would have the worst lag at 18 minutes.
2. Netcode - How infomration from the client and sever are shared between each other is also fairly important; included is lag compensation or how the game attempts to cover through the magic of mathmatics and predictive behaviors figures out the story before they happen. While most mmos can manage even up to as much as 3 seconds of total lag without any loss of quality in game play; Shooters cannot tolerate more than a second at times.
3. Fake lag - Performance Drops - Many gamers would call a drop in game performance also lag; Some games are poorly optimized but the connection can be superb without any issues. This can make it appear there is lag as the platform struggles to keep up with the proper story as the frames cannot fully reporesent what is going on. This can be easily resolved by lowering graphical setttings further.
4. Hardware imposed lag - This is similar to fake lag save for the simple fact that it is the hardware completely at fault rather than the graphical aspects. But essentially hardware imposed lag is anything that takes away the softwares ability to comphrend the received information quickly. This is most common on systems that are multitasking or have shared resources. This kind of lag is rather unusual but it can still happen; side effects can be cancellation in input, frame rate drop, crashes upon activation of another hardware, disconnects or if a massive story change received from the server a total lock up as the traffic jam becomes too great to handel and too much to catch up.
5. Software/network imposed lag - simialr to hardware the cause is from other programs running; The usual accusation of this would be the snide recommendation to stop downloading ****. Which is rather accurate association as other running software can cause this; Sloiwneess in updates; crashing out; running out of memory and many other kinds of symptoms can lead to this. Also this can be an internal issue with the software in question; For example do you really need to stream in real time what your friend is doing in another battlefield? While neat it would seriously wreck your own game as it would almost equated to trying to run two of the same game. Poor coding can also lead to this with bad optimization of actors, graphics, sound, and networking redundancies.
